What does with honors and distinction mean? ›

The Honours Award recognizes those students who have obtained an average mark of 80.00% to 84.99% in their course of studies in each of grades 9-12. The Honours with Distinction award recognizes those students who have obtained an average mark of 85% to 100% in their course of studies in each of grades 9-12.

As you'll soon learn, the answer is often a resounding “yes”! Whether you're looking to apply for a job, get into medical school, or attend grad school, admissions offices and potential employers will look at your academic record to learn more about you.

Section 5 - Grading Awards

The following minimum grade point average (GPA) thresholds are used in determining eligibility for awards with distinction: GPA of 5.5 for undergraduate courses, and. GPA of 6.0 for postgraduate courses.

Upon graduation, degrees are awarded with: Honors: Cumulative GPA in the range of 3.20 - 3.49. Distinction: Cumulative GPA in the range of 3.50 - 3.79. High Distinction: Cumulative GPA in the range of 3.80 - 4.00.

Maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout college is relatively rare, but definitely achievable. The prevalence of students with a 4.0 GPA depends on the institution and the program you're studying. In more rigorous or competitive programs, it may be less common, while in less demanding programs, it might be more attainable.

Honours with Distinction will be awarded for an average of 90% or greater. Only courses receiving a percentage grade can be used for HonourRoll calculations.

Classification calculation

Classifications will be awarded in accordance with the classification bands detailed below: 70% and above: Distinction. 60 – 69%: Merit. 40 – 59%: Pass.

Academic performance can also be awarded with other honors. Colleges and universities recognize students with awards such as, cum laude, meaning "with praise or with distinction." Given to those who earn at least a 3.5 to 3.6 GPA.

Why does my degree say with distinction? ›

In this case, the award is determined by the overall grade-point average. Students who rank in the upper 10 percent of their graduating class graduate with distinction. The upper third of those awarded distinction graduate with highest distinction.

If you say that someone or something has the distinction of being something, you are drawing attention to the fact that they have the special quality of being that thing. Distinction is normally used to refer to good qualities, but can sometimes also be used to refer to bad qualities.

Valedictorian, salutatorian, and designations like summa cum laude won't make it onto your college applications. These honors won't be official until the very end of your senior year, long after colleges have already made their final decisions.

Cum laude: “With distinction,” typically 3.5–3.6 GPA or top 16-35% of class. Magna cum laude: “With great distinction,” typically 3.7–3.8 GPA or top 6-15% of class. Summa cum laude: “With highest honor,” typically 3.9–4.0 GPA or top 1-5% of class.

Students may be awarded "Merits" and "Distinctions" for parts of the course or the whole course (depending on the institution) and "Honours" may be awarded at some institutions for exceptional performance throughout the course (as a grade above Distinction).

Graduation with Distinction recognizes graduates with high academic achievements and is applied at graduation. If you have a Graduation Grade Point Average (GGPA) of 3.70 or higher, you will receive a credential “with Distinction.”
