PITTSBURGH (AP) Cecil Espy raised his average to .800 with a three-run pinch triple and Barry Bonds added a two-run homer in a five-run fifth inning as Pittsburgh Pirates continued their best start in 19 years with a 9-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. Espy, who still hasn't started a game, is 8 for 10 overall and 4 for 4 as a pinch-hitter and his seven RBIs are second on the Pirates to Bonds' nine. The Pirates have won five straight and six of their last seven and are 8-2 for the first time since 1973, the only year between 1970-75 that they didn't win the National League East. Just as in Friday's 7-4 victory, the Pirates were helped by the Phillies' so-far suspect defense. Phillies starter Tommy Greene (1-1) walked Jay Bell with one out in the first and Andy Van Slyke looped a single that fell between left fielder Ruben Amaro and shortstop Mariano Duncan.

Duncan was replacing rookie Kim Batiste, who committed four errors Friday. Greene then walked Bonds and Merced to force in a run and Van Slyke scored when Duncan's throw to second failed to beat Merced ori Jeff King's grounder. Pirates starter Zane Smith doubled in the second and scored on Bell's double play grounder to make it 3-0. The Phillies scored twice in the third on run-scoring singles by Dave Hollins and John Kruk, but Greene never got out of the fifth. Van Slyke singled for his third hit to start the fifth and Bonds promptly hit Greene's next pitch into the right-field seats for his NL-high fifth homer.

Bonds didn't hit his fifth last year until May 25. Merced, Mike LaValliere and Jose Lind singled to load the bases before Espy tripled, giving him six RBIs in his four pinch-hit at-bats. He had 11 RBIs in 82 at-bats last year. Lind tripled and scored on Re-dus pinch single in the seventh, making Pirates pinch hitters 8 for 11 with 10 RBIs. Democratic presidential front runner Bill Clinton attended the game, sitting in a box seat behind the Pirates dugout CUBS 5, CARDINALS 4 ST.

LOUIS (AP) Dwight Smith doubled twice and drove in three runs arjd Andre Dawson added a two-run homer to lead Chicago. With St Louis leading 4-3 in the sixth, Ryne Sandberg and Dawson each singled with two outs before Smith doubled to put the Cubs ahead. The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Dawson was hit by a pitch and Smith delivered a run-scoring double. Cardinals came back with' three runs in the bottom of (he second. Brian Jordan hit the first of his three doubles, then Milt Thompson was hit by a pitch.

Tom Pagnozzi tripled for two runs and scored when shortstop Jose Vizcaino made an errant throw to third. Chicago tied the score in the fourth when Mark Grace singled ahead of Dawson's homer. The Cardinals regained the lead in the fourth on doubles by Pedro Guerrero and Jordan. EXPOS 8, METS 6 MONTREAL (AP) Montreal took advantage of two Mets' errors in the eighth inning, including one by center fielder Howard Johnson, to break a tie. With one out and the score tied 5-5, Larry Walker singled off loser Jeff Innis (1-1) and scored when Tim Wallach's single to left-center was booted by Johnson.

Wallach went to second on the play and advanced to third on Marquis Gris-som's single. Rick Cerone then grounded into a fielder's choice to score Wallach and Grissom scored from second when third baseman Chris Donnels threw John Vander Wal's grounder past Bill Pecota at second into the right-field comer for another error. Bill Landrum (2-0) was (he winner in relief and John Wetteland worked the ninth, allowing an RBI single to Bobby Bonnila.
